Chapter 17

When she walked inside, the girls were all lined up waiting to hear about her romantic date. How she wished she could tell them that he’d proposed. It would’ve been a dream come true. Instead, she had to tell them that nothing of the sort had happened.

The younger girls went to bed while Mamm went into the kitchen. Needing some parental advice, Mercy joined her mother.

“What am I going to do, Mamm? When will he propose? I thought he’d do it on Friday and then I hoped he’d do it tonight.”

“Nee, Mercy. He wouldn’t be a responsible man to ask you that quickly. He has to get to know you first.”

“What Mamm means is, he’d be a fool to marry you.” Cherish giggled.

“I thought you’d gone to bed.”

“I’m getting a drink of water. Why don’t you marry Jonathon? Nee, he’s probably too choosy.”

“Stop it. Don’t let her say things like that to me, Mamm.”

Mamm just stared at her and then Florence walked into the kitchen. “Just relax about it all Mercy. It will happen if it’s meant to happen.”

Mercy gasped “I can't help it. I'm not doing it deliberately. That’s just how I feel.”

Her mother held her head. “You lot will be the death of me. Now I have a dreadful headache and I'll have to go to bed. I can’t take any of you any longer. It’s just too much.” Mamm walked out of the room.

“I always get the blame.” Mercy pushed out her chair and ran away crying and reached the stairs before her mother. Florence watched as Mercy took the stairs two at a time.

Cherish got herself a glass of water, took a mouthful and tipped the rest down the sink. Florence guessed she had just wanted to hear what her sister was going to talk about with their mother.

“Gut nacht, Cherish. Unless you want to help me clean up?”

Cherish pretended to yawn as she stretched her hands above her head. “Nah, I’m too tired.” She walked out of the room.

It was then that Florence knew she’d be stuck with the washing up and the cleaning of the kitchen. At least it had only been the two of them for the Sunday dinner of leftovers. After a few minutes, Mercy was back and sat down at the kitchen table.

Florence wiped her hands on a hand towel and sat down beside her. The only reason she’d be back was to talk. “Don't be upset.”

She looked up at her through misty eyes. “How can I not be? I need guidance from my mudder and she … says nothing.”

“I know. Don't mind Mamm.”

“Does he think I’m not good enough?”

“If he does, he has no taste at all.”

“We get along so well. He’s said so many lovely things to me and we talked about how we wanted our houses to be and everything.”

“Are you in love with him?”

“I’m sure I am, but the only thing is he jokes all the time. I don't find it funny and I don’t understand any of it.
